Air travel will become a little dearer from Wednesday. Many airlines have decided to hike the fuel surcharge by Rs 100 following the increase in the aviation turbine fuel (ATF).
Leading private carrier Jet Airways said it would hike fares from Wednesday, while SpiceJet and Paramount Airways confirmed they would follow suit.
With this, a passenger will have to fork out Rs 1,575 in taxes and surcharges on one air ticket.
This is the fifth time in the last one year that the fares have been hiked, mainly due to the ATF prices going northwards. The last time it was increased was in August. Jet fuel prices have been rising constantly and the surcharge has risen from Rs 300 in July 2006 to Rs 1,200.
The oil PSUs have hiked the ATF prices between Rs 1,604.52 per kilolitre (kl) to Rs 1703.49 per kl in the sale price in October as compared to the previous month at the four major metro cities. ATF accounts for about 35 per cent of the operating cost of any domestic airline in India.
In Delhi, aviation fuel for domestic airlines will now cost Rs 39,767.75 per kilolitre as against Rs 38,163.23 a month ago.
