Shiradi Ghat on National Highway 48 is the road that connects Port City of Mangalore to the State capital. It has been in a pathetic condition for over a year now since no repair works have been taken to make the road motorable, the travellers are facing problems. The plight of the road is so bad that it seems like connectivity between the two major cities of the State are almost cut off.
The authorities have been giving assurance that the roads will be repaired at the earliest but so far no works have been started. To add to the problems, the heavy vehicles remain parked on the roadside unable to proceed due to the bad roads. This serpentine queue of parked heavy vehicles starts from Gundya and lasts till Maranahalli, covering a distance of about 20 kms.
The road has turned into a curse for the pilgrims coming to Dharmasthala and Subramanya and the businessmen and employees plying to and fro between the two cities.
When the road block occurs on this road, the traffic do not open up for over 7 hours. In this situation the traveller in general and women and children in specific are thrown into dire straits, even leaving them craving for water, which is not available here on this stretch.
KSRTC buses have changed the routes seeing the plight of the road. Some buses ply through Bangalore-Uppinangady-Ujire-Charmadi Ghat while some other buses ply through Uppinangady-Gundya-Kaikamba-Bisile ghat road. Several buses even take Puttur-Madikeri-Mysore route. But no matter which alternate route the buses take, the new routes take more duration than the usual Shiradi ghat route.
With so many problems still left unattended, the authorities are behaving as though it is not their concern.
Considering the political scenario unfurling in the state, the repair of this road in near future seems very vague.
