BSNL to expand CDMA services
DH News Service, Kolkata:

The state-owned BSNL which plans to pump in Rs 900 crore to boost expansion of its CDMA services, is eyeing Class A and other cities including Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata for further penetration, top BSNL sources said here on Tuesday.

On offer will be a fixed CDMA wireless terminal for residential use, a mobile connection and data service including high speed internet that will come under a single bundled price structure and the services are likely to gradually start rolling out in these cities from December this year, sources told the Deccan Herald.

With Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications already making their presence felt in the CDMA category, the national telecom giant has drawn up a two-phase investment schedule to take on the competitors in this highly technical segment.

In the first phase, Rs 300 crore will be spent in the next three months to augment the CDMA infrastructure prior to the rollout. This will be followed by the launching of the CDMA services in December. In the second, the balance Rs 600 crore will be spent, sources said.

There are also plans to launch such attractive services as EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimised) once the CDMA services are in place. EV-DO offers  a high speed broadband connectivity  for CDMA users under the Third Generation(3G) programme.

Explaining the advantage of the services, the sources said the EV-DO equipment comes along with the infrastructure for CDMA and BSNL has decided to rollout broadband facility in the CDMA handsets using the same equipment. Next in the pipeline are Tricon and UPN (Universal Personal Number) facilities. Under Tricon BSNL will offer as a bundled product both landline and cellular connections and internet services at a tariff which will allow 30 per savings on the present expenses.

UPN is a facility offering a universal number that will allow subscribers to receive or make calls from any BSNL landline or cellphone connections at reduced rates.
