The Institute of Nephro-Urology which provide comprehensive treatment of diseases pertaining to nephrology and urology was inaugurated on Thursday by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.
The Institute, the first of its kind in the country dedicated to poor and the weaker sections of the society by the government is located at the erstwhile building of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in the premises of Victoria Hospital campus.
It is established at a cost of Rs 15 crore for the weaker sections of the society who cannot afford the cost in the private and corporate hospitals especially with regard to kidney transplantation and dialysis. Now they can think of the treatment at a subsidised rate.
The Institute is equipped with six modern operation theatres, full fledged ICU, special and general wards.
Experts in urology, nephrology and allied specialities have been recruited to perform surgeries like kidney transplantation, minimally invasive surgery, endoscope, laproscopy, cancers of the genito-urinary tract apart from providing treatment for kidney stones without surgery, impotence and infertility of the male. Speaking on the occasion Mr Kumaraswamy said that with a demand for dialysis and kidney transplantation increasing day by day the institute will provide treatment to these diseases to patients from the weaker sections of the society.
There are more than 20 lakh patients with renal failure in the country and in Karnataka alone there are approximately two lakh patients with renal failure apart from other nephro-urology related diseases.
