DH News Service,Tumkur:

The problems of farmers has been growing due to globalisation and it has affected the lives of 75 per cent of the people, who have taken up agriculture as their source of survival, opined Dr Venkatareddy Ramareddy, Kannada lecturer at the Tumkur University.

He was speaking on ‘Globalisation and farmers’ problems’ at a special lecture organised by Tumkur Rotary Club.
Worldwide over 7,000 languages are on the verge of extinction due to the ill-effects of globalisation. The agriculturists, who are the custodians of local language and culture, have been put in a precarious  situation, he added.

Threat
The farmers, who are solely dependent on farm land, are facing the threat of losing land. Maharashtra government has announced support price to all the crops long ago. However, the Karnataka government has been giving minimum support price to only a few crops, he noted.

He said, compared to Maharashtra, the situation of Karnataka farmers is worse.
Already 47 farmers have committed suicide.

Gulbarga district. which is known for growing tur crop, has witnessed many farmers committing suicides due to the crop getting infected.

The foreign companies have been trying to control the farmers by distributing their own seeds.
The farmers must be aware of the dangers, he added.

Tumkur Rotary Club President Shivashankar Kadadevaramatha presided over the function. Secretary H C Kumaraswamy proposed vote of thanks.
