Political uncertainty in the State has cast its shadow on ‘Dasara celebrations’ in Mysore. Political developments have already affected the preparations for the nine-day festivities in the City of Palaces. Now, the authorities are confronted with another problem.
As per protocol, the Chief Minister should flag off the spectacular jamboo savari on October 21. However, in the prevailing political situation, the State may not have head of the government on that day. As the state appeared heading for president’s rule, the district authorities have already sounded Governor Rameshwar Thakur to flag off the jamboo savari.
“He has already been informed about the impending possibility of his flagging off the savari at 2.30 pm. In fact, he was scheduled to be here for the torchlight parade at Bannimantapa at 6.30 pm,” sources said.
First time
The political turbulence had never affected Dasara celebrations. In 1980s the then Chief Minister Gundu Rao had assigned his deputy Veerappa Moily to flag off jamboo savari following bereavement in the family.
Glory
Gundu Rao had brought back the lost glory into Dasara as the Government had not celebrated the event for three years for various reasons. Though, Mysore Deputy Commissioner Channappa Gowda claimed that preparations were in full swing, sources disclosed that invitations have not been sent for printing.
