Atapattu may join ICL
After rejecting a place in the Australia-bound national team, former Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu is believed to be considering playing for the breakaway Indian Cricket League.
“There are indications that he has a link with the Indian rebel league,” said Sri Lankan Cricket selection committee chief Ashantha de Mel on Sunday.
Sania faces Dulko in round one
Sania Mirza will launch her campaign against Gisela Dulko of Argentina in the USD 2,340,000 prize money WTA Kremlin Cup begining Monday in Moscow, reports PTI from New Delhi.
The 29th-ranked Sania would like to avenge her previous two defeats to the Argentine — in French Open in 2005 and in a Tier III event in Pattaya City in February this year — when they face-off in the opening round of the Tier I event.
Hockey body in a fix
Orissa girls scored 50 goals in two matches of the 37th Junior women’s National hockey championship at Gwalior which has made the hockey association functionaries of the state a worried lot, reports PTI from Bhubaneswar.
The Orissa Women’s Hockey Association’s had promised cash prize of Rs 1,000 for each goal scored by the team in the championship. The Orissa team thrashed Tripura by 42 goals in the Pool-E league match on Friday. They followed it up with a triumph over Maharastra by eight goals on Saturday.
Worse, the Association had a zero balance in its bank account, its secretary Laltendu Das said. “We have to find sponsors for the cash award. The Association President Frida Topno and I had promised the girls of the cash prize the girls boarded the train to Gwalior on October two,” he said.
Former BCB chief jailed
The former president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board Ali Asghar was sentenced to 13 years in jail by a Dhaka court on Sunday on corruption charges, a state prosecutor said, reports Reuters from Dhaka.
" Ali Asgharwill have to serve 10 years in jail for (illegally) amassing wealth, and another three years for concealing the information in his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)," the prosecutor told reporters.
Bengal lift Jr Natl football title
Holders West Bengal retained their crown defeating Uttar Pradesh 2-1 in the final of the 30th Sub-Junior (U-16) National football championship on Sunday, reports PTI from Haldwani.
Suprovan Dhar scored a brace for the winners (17th and 30th minutes) while Uttar Pradesh pulled one back through Krishna Kumar in the 63rd minute.
