Samaritans from corporate world
By Hemanth C S, DH News Service,Bangalore:
'Every Terrier is twice a citizen, once in his ordinary job and once when he is in uniform as a soldier. There cannot be a more apt tag line describing the lives of these men who apart from being part of the corporate world, also have an opportunity to serve the nation as competent soldiers.

These good samaritans shed their sophisticated corporate lifestyle once in a while to be part of an elite force, that is involved in various activities from safeguarding the nation’s security to carrying out relief operations in times of any disaster.

The City-based 106 Infantry Battalion (TA) PARA is one such unit of the Territorial Army, which boasts of having such men in their ranks.

Meet Major Nandu Kumar, who while not executing his duties as the CEO of a software firm slips into his army uniform to perform his duties as a proud officer of the unit, which is also referred to as ‘Bangalore Terriers’.

“Being a part of the Territorial Army is a unique experience. Apart from leading a normal civilian life, you also get to live the life of a soldier,” said Major Kumar, who has been part of counter insurgency operations like Operation Parakaram at Jammu and Kashmir.

He narrated his experiences on the Operation, where he along with his team members were involved in Road Opening Party (ROP) units and various other tasks that were assigned to the army.

Another officer of 106 Infantry Battalion (TA) PARA, which is affiliated to the elite Parachute Regiment, said that being part of the army and rendering service to the nation has been the most satisfying experience in his life.
“Being an NCC Cadet with a ‘C’ Certificate, I always had a desire to join the army. The Territorial Army gave me the opportunity to don the uniform and serve the country. ” said Major Dafedar, employed with General Insurance.

Commissioned into the Territorial Army in 1995 he said that his association with the army has helped him bring more discipline in his professional life.

The Unit has another officer, Capt Srinivas Rao, who is employed in the State Bank of India.

Unlike the regular Army, which is facing a shortage of around 10,000 officers, the Territorial Army has no such problems, thanks to the enthusiasm of such men.
