“From green revolution to IT, BT revolution, India has only witnessed the polarisation of the rich and the poor, widening the divide and demarcation between the two. Hence the social workers must clearly aim at the upliftment of the poor,” said Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa addressing the inaugural programme of the PG department of Social Work of Meredian College Mangalore on Monday at Sahodaya hall.
He opined that an array of revolutions took place such as green revolution, food revolution, industrial and agricultural revolution, Information technology boom and Bio technology boom. All of these revolution have brought about economic growth too. But it failed to elevate the poor who still continue to live below poverty line. While the number of riches has considerably increased. This has created a divide in the society.
He pointed that in foreign countries, people voluntarily create documents that they are poor to avail facilities of the government, but in India nobody wishes to be poor.
Arch Diocese of Kottayam Bishop Joseph Pandarasseril said that it is not enough if an individual attains higher education. Most importantly he must imbibe the values and apply good values socially.
Citing example Mahender Singh, the accused in Noida children’s murder case, he said that though the accused is highly educated, he did not reach the level of being civilised.

Later a seminar on Career without borders: Opportunities and challenges for social workers was held. KMC Mangalore Managing Executive H S Bhat said that some years ago a person who used to change his job frequently was considered to be unreliable. Today the time has changed. If a person changes jobs more often, he is considered to be more competent.
“In this competitive world, there is no sector that does not need a MSW candidate. From health to hospitality, a MSW pass out is welcomed. Hence they have a wide career opportunity.” he said.
