In yet another case of domestic violence, a woman police sub- inspector has accused her husband, a senior IAS officer, of harassment and dragged him to court.
Alleging that her husband Amitabh Joshi, a 1988 batch IAS officer, has lost his balance, PSI Veena Sawkar has moved court for relief under the Domestic Violence Act following “mental and physical harrasment”.
“We always had our differences. Joshi did not take due care of himself and was diagonised with various health problems. My trauma began on August 12 when he abused me a lot physically and mentally while being intoxicated after which I moved the court on August 24,” Sawkar alleged.
“Apart from physical abuse, he humiliated me on the basis of my caste, colour and low rank in the services,” she added.
Refuting all the charges, Joshi, who is the MD of the Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation, said he had to be admitted to a hospital following deterioration of health due to “torture” for over five years from his wife and mother-in-law on August 12.
“Sawkar does not take proper care of our four-and-half-year-old-daughter. I want her custody and want Sawkar to be out of my home,” Joshi said at a press meet at his office.
Sawkar has been successful in getting interim relief from the court under which she has the custody of the couple’s minor daughter and she can share the shelter with Joshi.
“In spite of the order of the court dated Oct 3, Joshi continues to abuse me, does not allow our daughter to speak to me and has managed to retain the 24-hour security cover,” Sawkar alleged.
“I will disobey the orders of the court and nobody can separate me from my daughter. Sawkar cannot take care of her and does not even know her likes and dislikes,” Joshi said.
Sawkar’s lawyer Rohini Wagh said they are contemplating moving an application for contempt of court.
Joshi further made a string of allegations against his wife which included she being involved in human trafficking, a drug addict, having assets disproportionate to her income and using her good offices to tap his phone, among others.
“All these allegations are baseless and I would not like to comment on the same. He has lost his mental balance and needs treatment,” Sawkar said.
This case comes years after IAS officer Nidhi Pandey accused her husband Deepak Pandey, an IPS officer who was then an ADC to the Governor of Maharashtra, of domestic violence.
