“The EC has directed all the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of States to get the electoral rolls of 2008 published by mid-January 2008,” an EC spokesman said on Monday. Snap polls are also a possibility in Karnataka.
Even though he tried to play down the order by saying that it was routine affair, he maintained that the Commission should also be prepared in view of the political uncertainty.
“The revision is an ongoing exercise called summary revision which is carried out every year by bringing fresh electoral rolls with January 1 as base date,” the spokesman said.
The direction was given at a review meeting held here on Monday with CEOs of 14 states and Union Territories from Southern and Western India.
The Commission would be meeting CEOs from northern and eastern states on Tuesday.
Elector Photo Identity Cards (EPIC), rationalisation of polling stations and use of Geographical Information System in election management were some of the other issues that came up for discussion at the meeting.
