For the media waiting outside Raj Bhavan on Monday evening, the twists and turns of “news” surpassed even a Dan Brown plot.
With the media turning up in full-swing waiting for political drama to unfold and reporters contacting sources for the latest, it was “breaking news” by the minute. But majority of the news turned out it to be either speculation or rumour.
Around 5 pm, it was said in the face of resentment among legislators over not honouring the power-sharing pact, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had done a U-turn and agreed to offer letter of support to the BJP to enable it to form government.
As media waited for Kumaraswamy to arrive at Raj Bhavan, various versions emerged. Till around 8:30 pm, it was more or less expected the JD(S) would ‘support’ the BJP. Kumaraswamy then reached Raj Bhavan to hand over his resignation letter. It then became clear there was no supporting letter. It finally turned out to be an anti-climax - the Governor had reportedly recommended for President’s rule.
At the end of the day, many party workers were heard saying, “The father and son again staged a drama today....”
Over the past couple of days, Raj Bhavan has virtually doubled up as a stage for the State’s political theatre. The aborted transfer of power — from the JD(S) to the BJP — has turned the otherwise serene setting of the Governor’s residence into a scene of bustle, complete with thronging partymen, security personnel and hordes of journalists.
Governor Rameshwar Thakur has been repeatedly “briefed” by leaders of the JD(S), BJP and Congress in the last three days. After the BJP submitted its withdrawal of support to the government on Sunday, the frequency of “briefings” has increased, and the action reached a high on Monday, culminating in the resignation of Kumaraswamy.
