Problems and promises
The countdown for Mangalore City Corporation election has begun. In 2002 election, Congress had emerged victorious from 42 wards, followed by BJP in 14 wards and independents in 4 wards. Deccan Herald will give you a glimpse of the problems in 60 wards and what the candidates plan to tackle them in the next few days.

Mangalore City Corporation elections are scheduled o be held on September 28.

Ward 1 Surathkal (west)
This ward include Doddakoppalu, Jayanagara, Mithrapattana, parts of Mukka, Konkanabailu, NITK campus, Mukka junction, R N Shetty Compound area. BJP candidate K Revathi had won the last election. There are 5,143 voters. Not many developments have taken place in this ward after the last election. Sea erosion continue to haunt the residents of Mukka. No permanent solutions have been worked out. Fish meal factory at Mukka is also causing pollution in the region as a result, many wells have discoloured water. Roads are also not well developed in this part of the region. Many do not have ration cards in the ward.

One of the candidates Revathi said “I will try to solve the problems being faced by the people.” Another candidate Shanthi said “I will preference to the distribution of ration card, underground drainage, solving shortage of drinking water and repairing the roads.”

Ward 2 Surathkal (East)
It includes Udayanagara, Padre, Ganesh Nagara, Aranthabettu, Tadambailu, Munchur, Madya, Kodipadi, Madhavanagara, Kashimath, Chokkabettu and parts of Mukka. BJP candidate Rajani Dugganna had won the last election in 2002. There are 4,823 voters. The residents have water problem. Apart from this the fourlaning of roads from Baikampady to NITK is creating havoc to the residents. There is no proper underground drainage and storm water drains for the easy flow of rain water. Congress candidate Aruna said “this ward has many problems. With the support of the local people and leaders I will try to solve the problems.”

 Ward 3 Katipalla (East)
The ward includes block 1 Mahaganapathy temple area, Block II Masjid area, Block III Ganesh Katte area. Congress candidate Rehnabanu P M had won the last election. There are 6,147 voters.

The ward houses rehabilitants and is the storehouse of problems. Many residents are waiting for title deeds, ration cards. Many places in the wards do not have basic facilities like underground drainage system. Moreover, plying of vehicles to MRPL is creating pollution in the form of dust.

One of the candidate Lakshman Acharya said “I will give priority to solve the problem of title deeds in the ward. Later, roads, drainage system will be rectified.” Basheer Ahammed said “Problems will be solved by giving preferences to the needs of the people.”

Ward 4 Katipalla-  Krishnapura
This ward includes  Krishnapura VII block, Vishwanath Temple area, Dhoomavathi Dhaivasthana area, IV block Naithangady. Last Corporator from this ward was Congress candidate Savitha Sundar Shetty. There are 6,136 voters.

The ward has severe crunch of water problem. Water is being supplied once in two days. Many areas do not get water properly. More than 1,000 families are still waiting for title deeds. Many areas do not have proper underground drainage system. Owing to the ADB project, several roads have been dug and kept in the same manner.

BJP candidate Thilakraj said “I will try to work towards the welfare of the people by solving the shortage of drinking water.”

Ward 5 Katipalla (North)
Parts of Chokkabettu, Krishnapura V ward, VII block, VIII block, VI block and VIII A block come under this ward. Congress candidate Gulzar Bhanu S Sheik had won the election in 2002. There are 6,217 voters.
Shortage of drinking water, no proper roads to some areas in the region, lack of disposal of waste are some of the problems haunting the residents. 

Candidate Abdul Aziz said “I know the woes of the residents in the ward. I will try to solve all their problems with the support of the people’s representatives.”  Congress candidate Gulzar Bhanu said “I had contested from the same ward last time. A proposal to solve the water problems in this ward has been sent.”

Ward 6 Idya (East)
This ward include Navanagara VII block, Agaramelu, Janata colony, Katla Ashraya colony, Idya Ashraya colony, Katla. Indira from Congress had won the election in 2002. There are 5,623 voters.

Many of the families residing in these colonies do not have title deeds. Scarcity of water continue to haunt the people. The residents are also demanding an overbridge between Surathkal railway station to MRPL road.
BJP candidate Sunil Kumar said “water woes of the people will be solved as soon as BJP comes to power.” Congress candidate S Pramod Bhandary said “Ashraya colony in the ward needed a hospital. The woes of the people were never heard before. I will try to solve them one by one.”

Ward 7 Idya (West)
This ward includes Karambitlu, parts of Kana, Surathkal light house, Sadashivanagara 1 block, Doddakoppalu, Battara road, Church road. Congress candidate Vanitha Salian has won the last election. The ward has 5,473 voters.

Government hospital in Surathkal lacks basic facilities. Shortage of drinking water, deplorable condition of roads, uneven supply of electricity, discrepancies in the distribution of BPL cards are some of the problems faced by the residents.

One of the candidate Sukumar Indra said “we have many problems in the ward. I have a faith that I can solve it, so I have entered the field.” Ashok Shetty said “preferences will be given to provide basic facilities to the residents of the ward.”

Ward 8 Hosabettu
The ward includes Kadambodi, Shivagirinagara, Maruthinagara, Pragathinagara, Surathkal market, Govindadasa College area. BJP candidate Chandrshekar Shetty had won the last election. The ward has 5,807 voters.
Owing to the fourlaning of the road, residents are facing the problem of dust. Artificial floods and sea erosion continue in Hosabettu. Underground drainage system also need to be rectified.

BJP candidate Rajani Dugganna said “the ward has series of problems. I have already made some plans as how I have to go about and will provide better services to the people.”

Ward 9 Kulai
The ward includes Adka, Kodikere, Krishnanagara, Kulaigudde, Honnakatte bridge, Kulai.  BJP candidate Vedavathi had won the last election. There are 7,432 voters. Residents suffer from shortage of water. No proper bus facility to Kodikere. Many families are deprived of BPL cards. A railway line on the way to Kodikere is also creating problems to the commuters as the gate will be closed nearly for 45 minutes before the arrival of the train.  

Candidate Ganesh Hosabettu said “the ward is a vast area. Shortage of bus facilities to Kodikere have been brought to the notice of MLA. Unitedly, we will solve the problem.” Another candidate Sathish said “there is a need to have a organised set up to solve the problems. I will work for the people.”

Ward 10 Baikampady
The ward includes Chitrapura, Gokulanagara, Subhashnagara, Honnakatte, Baikamapady old check post, industrial area, parts of Hosabettu and Honagaragundi. BJP candidate Pramila Kanchan has won the last election. There are 4,978 voters.

No proper drainage facilities. Though APMC has been constructed, no vendors are using the facilities. Fisherwomen sell fishes adjacent to the NH. Many are deprived of BPL cards. Candidate Yashavantha Meenakaliya said “more basic facilities need to be provided to the people of the region. Roads also need to be developed.”
