Satin is the fabric of the year, say fashion forecasts. The sensual sheen of the fabric has time and again created demand in bridal and lingerie section. Although Mumbai recently ranked 18 in the world's fashion list, Bangalore has its own highlights.
It’s proliferation of pubs and lounge bars with exotic restaurants, has ushered a new lifestyle, which endorses international fashion consciousness. Naturally, the lustrous and sophisticated satin has become the fabric for the global Bangalorean. As Sheena S, a regular pub-goer said, "I prefer printed satin skirts because they are stylish and ideal for parties."
While several brands have incorporated satin into their product portfolio, Hum India, a stand-alone retail store, is worth visiting for it’s exhaustive satin range. "Satin once restricted to nightwear, is today integrated with cotton and lycra outfits as well. With technology, satin can take on plain or printed versions. Depending on its weight, satin finds different applications," explained Amrita Gokani, proprietor, Hum India.
The store scores for it’s party wear, which includes a variety of satin-georgette tops. The skirt section is surprising, as it unfolds stylish satin-chiffon skirts in pleasant shades of peach and blue. Printed skirts come in unbelievable pastel, bright and dark shades sporting floral prints.
These can be teamed with strappy, strapless, one shoulder or shimmery tops sourced from world over. "We've got an assortment of shirts, crafted with satin pockets for a smooth feel. These can be worn with plain cotton-satin trousers," Amrita pointed out.
Satin stoles and scarves in abstract designs give a hint of femininity. Comfort is the mantra behind the nightwear collection here, which comprises plain and printed sets. The satin concept then extends to a lingerie line. Finally, a long evening black dress beckons, especially if one is heading out to a special dinner or to a black-tie affair.
Designers are now crafting dreams in satin for people across age groups in India. Describing the fabric as versatile, designer Manoviraj Khosla said he has used satin trimmings for men’s shirts as well. "Satin's USP lies in it’s versatility and softness.
It can be blended with synthetic, usually lycra, which is ideal for shirts. Satin silk, another version, works wonders as borders for skirts or dresses. Everything depends on how you style it," the designer added. He has worked with the textile from time to time. "Given it’s drape, sheen and fall, satin silk saris look elegant and synthetic satin gives trousers a fitted look," said Manoviraj.
Satin has a plethora of interesting applications. Being luxurious, it's a perfect embellishment, often complemented with lace. Its glossy nature lends itself to bags and batuas.
Sometimes a printed batua is matched with a plain satin outfit or vice versa. International brands like Morgan and Next are using the material extensively as well. Nearer home, independent shoemakers have occasionally experiment with satin adornment. Sport some satin for a super-sexy look.
