Govt to appoint 2,450 temporary teachers

Faced with a severe shortage of faculty in newly-established government PU colleges, the State Cabinet on Wednesday approved temporary appointment of 2,450 retired teachers till full-fledged faculty is appointed by the KPSC.

Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said the process of conducting the test for recruitment of teachers would take at least six months. As a temporary measure, the government will appoint retired teachers on a salary of Rs 5,000 per month.

The Cabinet also decided to set up a law university in Rayapura between Hubli-Dharwad this year.

The university, which will have all law colleges in the State under its aegis, will be established by promulgating an ordinance, Mr Horatti said.

The Cabinet also approved commencement of new PG courses in six colleges in medical, dental, ayurveda and pharmacy streams. While MVJ Medical College, Bangalore has been given permission to start 11 new courses, Al-Badar Rural College in Gulbarga has been given the nod to start a new PG dental course.

The Cabinet gave its approval for establishment of a Diabetes Institute at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in Bangalore at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore.

Final clearance was given for taking up developmental work in 1,112 villages under Suvarnagrama yojane.

Karnataka Land Army will implement the project and as many as 396 villages will be taken up during the first phase, Mr Horatti said.

The Cabinet gave administrative approval for Bhadra Canal modernisation project at a cost of Rs 916 crore under the Prime Minister Farmers’ Package.

Nod for stadiums

The Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval for two new stadiums in the City. Speaking to reporters, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti said the Cabinet gave its approval for construction of a stadium in Brindavanagar at a cost of Rs 16.8 crore.

Another stadium will come up at Hombegowdanagar at a cost of Rs 7.58 crore.
