Lucky you
Priyanka Haldipur
English
Cast: Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, Robert Duvall, Debra Messing
Director: Curtis Hanson

When Bana and Barrymore come together, you’re expecting a love story to unfold. It does, except that the one dominating the scene is the love-hate story between Bana and Duvall, who plays his father.

Poker champion L C Cheever (Duvall) abandoned his wife and son Huck (Bana) years ago, but Huck carries a chip over his shoulder till date. And he suffers more than he should since he lets his emotional hangups come in the way of his game. Did we mention he’s a compulsive poker player!

Like most men, Huck comes with a commitment problem, and like most women Billy (Barrymore) decides to “fix” this man the minute she meets him for the first time. But the only problem like Cheever senior rightly points out to Huck is: “You play cards the way you should lead your life. And you lead your life the way you should play cards”.

And Billy, inspite of her profuse cuteness, just cannot repair him. The film’s solo moment of brief excitement comes when father and son end up on the final table of the 2003 World series of Poker.

‘Lucky You’ shows off a bit of Vegas and lots of Poker. It starts of with an amusing exchange between Huck and a pawnbroker.

If only the magic had lasted throughout the film, or Bob Dylan’s contribution (Huck’s Tune) to the OST of the film had played all along.

The bitter truth is that if it weren’t for the big names in the star cast, you might not even give a second look to this slow-paced drama. It’s ‘In your shoes’ all over again!
