The BMTC has decided to run 150 more Volvo buses to IT corridors from various destinations in the City.

Speaking on the sidelines of a seminar on ‘Doubling public transport share: A thrust to make public transport a choice for every citizen’ on Thursday, Principal Secretary for Transport P B Ramamurthy said, in a recent meeting held with heads of IT companies, it was decided to increase the number of buses to IT hubs like Electronic City and Whitefield.

Many of the IT companies appreciated the quality of BMTC service and demanded more buses so that they can reduce their private vehicle operations for employees, he added. He said 50 such buses will be introduced within a month’s time.

Chief Secretary S V Ranganath said: “It is shocking to know that 88 percent of vehicles we see on road today are personal vehicles and BMTC is vying with 49 lakh such vehicles.”

Clearing congestion, widening roads and making public transport popular are some of the ways through which commuting can be made smoother in the City.
