Although Mangaluru is a beautiful and historic city, it is losing some of its historical buildings, rued Campco former MD Pramod Kumar Rai.

He was addressing students after inaugurating the NCC wing and cultural contests as a part of Independence Day celebrations at St Agnes PU college here on Saturday.

Rai cited examples of the heritage houses of Deshabhaktha Karnad Sadashiva Rao (on KS Rao Road) and Shivbagh, the majestic 150-year-old bungalow, (located at Shivbagh in Kadri), where Ravindranath Tagore, Jawaharlal Nehru and Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari had stayed once upon time. He regretted that both were razed, thus leaving behind only its glorious history.

Recalling the moment, how Gandhiji’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi was elated to see the bungalow during his visit to the City last year, Rai regretted that no one could prevent the heritage buildings from demolition.

He explained the importance of discipline and at the same time to be cheerful. He called upon students to be honest in whatever they do and also gave an example of his father Kedambady Jattappa Rai, a Gandhian and freedom fighter.
The inauguration was followed by cultural programmes.
