Deccan Herald » Metro Life - Thurs » Detailed Story
Mystique mind-charmer
Sumaa Tekur
He snaps his fingers and the audience cracks up into peals of laughter. He snaps his fingers again and there is complete silence. Wielding his magic fingers to bring some fun and laughter along with self-awareness is comedian hypnotist Gavin Hooper. Metrolife caught up with Hooper and came away mesmerised by his charm. But were we hypnotised? Not exactly.

“You can be hypnotised only if you want to be. If you do not let me hypnotise you, I cannot,” says Hooper, who was in Bangalore recently as part of the ‘Black and White Unbelong with Gavin Hooper Tour’. Dressed in a crisp white shirt, his green eyes smiled every time he was about to say something funny.

He was fascinated most when asked to explain the difference between him and a psychotherapist. “That’s my pet peeve,” he rubs his hands calling a psychiatrist friend “nuts”. But then he comically stops to stay:

“I better be careful with what I say.” It’s not surprising that this sense of humour spills on to the stage giving him the edge to take the audience with him on a humourous journey. And not just with the snap of his fingers.

Does the process give Hooper control over his subjects? Not really, says Hooper. “When people get hypnotised they know what is happening to them. But the best part is that they do not care anymore,” he says.

Calling himself a comedic hypnotist and the “master of imagination” on his jazzy website www.gavinhooper.com, Hooper is different from other hypnotists in his effort to make the process entertaining and informative at the same time.

“You learn best when you are having fun. So when teenagers are laughing, I find a way to tell them not to drink and drive,” he explains.

While hypnotised, the subject’s senses are heightened. “I say - ‘open your eyes, drop your shoulders’ and they obey. What’s more, they love it because it is relaxing,” says Hooper. He considers hypnotism a form of meditation and magnified concentration. “There is constant chatter in your mind. Hypnosis helps your mind quieten down,” he says.

Hypnosis helps the process of healing by helping you face your fear, step back and face the fear again. You will realise the fear is gone.

Though in the field of hypnosis for 15 years, Hooper believes that he will never know everything there is to know in the field.

His advice on problem management? “If you have a small problem nagging you, you think about it all day and make it a big problem. Instead of brooding, go watch a comedy show, have a few laughs and forget about your problem. What’s crucial is to remember to forget your problem,” he says.

What does he think of Bangalore? “The weather is wonderful. I’ve constantly felt good and welcomed since I landed in India. But why is your traffic so bad?”
