Journey across fusion soundscapes
B V Prathyusha
On a cold December night, with the magnificent Bangalore Palace behind them, ‘Remembering Shakti’ created magic. The audience was enraptured by the group which consists of five musical geniuses – John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Selva Ganesh, U (Mandolin) Srinivas and Shankar Mahadevan – who played beautiful fusion music. Well known flutist Sashank lent his melodious tunes to some compositions.

The group then moved on to compositions like ‘Girija Sudha’ – which is a traditional carnatic kriti – a perfect example of what good fusion music is about. Though a traditional piece, it has light and soothing tune incorporated in it which makes it lighter than a pure Carnatic song.

And the maestros brewed a great union of music. Shankar Mahadevan enthralled the audience with his ‘breathless’ vocals, Zakir Hussain, apart from the tabla, handled cymbal unit, while Selva Ganesh took on the ghatam, kanjira and the mridangam.

McLaughlin’s guitar brought in a peaceful feeling and added a soothing touch to the compositions as his music created images of calm water.

The group played other compositions like ‘Sakhi’, a simple Thumri song. The ‘dance of happiness’ kicked off with a hilarious bol tan by Zakir and Selva Ganesh. While the audience were enjoying this, it moved on to simple music which even had Flintstones theme song making an appearance!

‘The Lotus feet’ was another melodious piece that brought down the racing tempos that Remembering Shakti is known for. ‘The five piece band,’ as the name suggests, showcased the talents of all the members of the band.

The band exhibited the brilliance of a live performance, creating a surge of energy and a journey through emotions that cannot be recreated in a CD or tape. Each was playing at the peak of brilliance with the last piece showcasing Zakir’s blazing talent and Selva Ganesh who made the kanjira sound like an entire percussion set.

The maestros joked around, laughed, and looked like a bunch of college students hanging out. At the end of it all, just two words came to mind – pure genius.
