Collage of myth & reality
Perin Ilavia
An exhibition of collage by G Subramanian, previewed at The Oberoi recently to help raise funds for Concern India Foundation.

Collage, an art form, developed when the Cubistic movement started in Europe 1907 onwards. A picture made from a variety of material such as paper, cloth, metal, leather, paint to gain a cubistic character - the intricate arrangement seen from different angles, superimposing the same picture.

Subramanian, Subra to friends, from Mahadevpur in Tamil Nadu, grew up intrigued with the Ganesha and Hanuman temples in his town. Studying art, he graduated in Graphic Design. He was not a serious painter, until about 20 years ago, when he started with line drawings in acrylic on canvas.

Being a graphic designer he experimented with paper collage, during his stay in Saudi Arabia. “I found I could work better with paper than with oil and water colours. It was very exciting, the work was exhibited and I got an award. No matter how hard you try, you cannot get the same result as collage, with other styles.”

Influenced by Western collage artists, he focusses on Indian mythology, as he “feels a connection”. “One can copy a painting, but it’s not easy to copy collage, and every composition is different. Mythology is a theme that everyone relates to and collage is a visual medium to enjoy,” said Subra.

Does he feel stagnated doing the same kind of work? Said Subra, “I have seen many artists struggle with different mediums and have had no satisfaction. I have no inclination to change, or move into total abstracts. I know my preference of style and medium and have had satisfying results.”

Concern India Foundation started in 1991 to support underprivileged children, abused and widowed women, disabled and the aged. They have had art shows to raise money for the activities of the Foundation. Sobha Rajan of the CIF said, “Artists donate a work or give it at a discount. Last year we had a group show and this year, we decided on Subramanian as his style is innovative and different. He’s a supporter of CIF and many donors have bought his works.”

Subra later told Metrolife that nine of his paintings were sold at the show and that he has donated a large portion of the collections to CIF.
