Three cheers for the Mozilla firefox browser

The freely downloadable Firefox browser is packed with useful features. You can block popups, view multiple pages and ensure security and privacy.

|
Browsers are the gateway to the world wide web. The more powerful the browser, the better your internet experience. The latest entry in the browser market — Firefox (www.mozilla. org/ products/firefox/) — offers many new features and options that let you browse the virtual world faster, better, and safer. And best of all, the browser is free!
Viewing multiple pages
The nicest feature of Firefox is ‘tabbed browsing’ which lets you open multiple links or pages in the same window instead of multiple windows. This technique not only keeps your desktop clutter-free, but also saves space. You have to open a tab for each link or a page that you wish to display. Each tab has the title of the page as the label, which helps you to select the tab of your choice.
To open a link in a page in one tab — say a webpage you're viewing has a hyperlink called Products. To open this link in a new tab, right-click on the link. From the menu, select Open Link in New Tab. You'll notice two tabs appear on the tab bar: The first (default) tab belongs to the page you've already opened. This tab has the title of the page as the label. The second tab has the text Untitled as the label. Firefox begins to load the products page in the second tab. After it completes loading, the label of the tab changes from Untitled to the title of the products page. To switch between the two pages, just click one of the two tabs.
Block Popups
With Firefox, no more annoying popups that may cover part of the page you're reading. Unless you like popups, you'll appreciate this feature of Firefox very much. When you install Firefox, it automatically enables the Block Popup Windows option.
For each popup that Firefox blocks, it displays an information bar. If you want to change settings related to popups, click the bar (or the x icon on the left side of the bar) and change settings in the four menus displayed.
Ensure security
Firefox doesn't allow harmful Active X controls to load and thus keeps your computer safe from malicious spyware programs. The browser also has a set of tools that protects the privacy of your online work. For example, you can choose not to save the data — you enter into forms and the Search Bar — to your hard disk.
Likewise, you can decide whether to allow all cookies or allow selectively. To explore these and other privacy options, go to ‘Tools’ and look for Options and then select the Privacy button.
Managing downloads
Have you wished that a browser would facilitate the management of all your past and current downloads from a single window? Firefox fulfils your desire through the Downloads window! To access it, select ‘Tools’ go to Downloads. Note that the Downloads window automatically appears when you start a download.
By default, all the files you download are saved to the desktop. What benefits does this offer? You don't have to specify the destination each time you download a file from the Internet. It is possible to designate another folder as the destination if you want. Select ‘Tools’ and then choose Options. From the ‘Downloads’ option go to ‘Show Folder’ and specify the new folder.
Let's explore some of the functions in the Downloads window: You can open a file you've downloaded directly from the window. Simply click the Open link. What's more, if you've cancelled a download or it fails for any reason, you can use the ‘Retry’ option. Just click the ‘Retry’ link (next to the file name) and the download resumes.
If you wish, you can selectively or entirely remove all the entries in the Downloads window. For the first case, use the Remove link that appears below the Open (or Retry) link for each entry. For the second, click the Clean Up button.
Search
Do you want to search on Google or Yahoo without visiting those sites? It's possible with Firefox! Just type the keyword/keyphrase in the Search Bar (you can find it to the right of the Location Bar). Then, click the down-arrow. Select, for example, Yahoo and press Enter Firefox displays the result of the Yahoo search. That's not all, you can also add a new search engine: From the drop-down list of the Search Bar, select Add Engines. Firefox displays the Firefox Central Page. Here, the Add New Search Engines heading lists several search engines. Click a name of the search engine. The Add Search Engine dialog displays. Click OK.
Display pages faster
The number and size of the graphics, among others, in a Web page affects its download - If the page has more number of images, the page displays slower. You may not wish to see the graphics in the sites that you regularly access, say of sites to check mail. For such sites, you can tell Firefox not to display the images.
Several home pages
Do you feel constrained that you can designate only one page as the start page? Not with Firefox. You can specify multiple pages as the home page to display when you start Firefox! Here are the steps: (a) Open the pages you want to specify as a home page, each in separate tabs. (b) Click Tools > Options. The Options dialog displays. (c) Click the General button on the left panel. (d) Click the Use Current Pages button on the right side. (e) Click OK. The next time you start Firefox, the pages display in their tabs.
