THE Institute of Higher Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China has come out with its own ‘league table’ of the top 500 universities in the world, based on the quality of education, the quality of faculty and their research output. Information such as the numbers of Nobel Prize winners among faculty and students, and citations and articles, were also taken into account in the 2005 survey.
Researchers at Jiao Tong University produced the results after looking at 1,000 institutions worldwide.
The world’s top university, according to the survey, is Harvard (USA). Cambridge University in England is the highest UK entry at number 2. It is also the highest-ranking European institution. Oxford University, another famous British university, is ranked tenth in the overall list.
The University of Sussex, in southern England, has maintained its position as one of the world’s leading universities. It is ranked among the top 150 in the world, the top 60 in Europe, and the top 15 in the UK in the survey.
In the worldwide ranking list, Harvard University and Cambridge are followed by seven US universities – Stanford, University of California – Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), California Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Princeton University and the University of Chicago. Then comes Oxford University in tenth place.
Ranked first among institutions in the Asia-Pacific region is Tokyo University, followed by another Japanese university, Kyoto. The Australian National University and Osaka University (Japan) also figure prominently in the regional list. Surprisingly, no Indian university or higher education institution finds a place among the top 100 in the overall list.
