Seminar on Learning Disabilities
UGC innovative programme on LD, DOS in Psychology, University of Mysore, Mysore and Scientific Learning Corporation, Oakland California, USA are jointly organising a one-day workshop on neuroscience-based interventions to Learning Disabilities (Using Neuroscience-based Interventions to Address Learning Disabilities that Inhibit Academic Success) on October 10, 2005 (10.00 am to 4.00pm) at, Mysore Sports Club, (Narasimharaja Boulevard, Lalith Mahal Palace Road,) Mysore 570 011)

Over the past several years, a number of studies of the living brain have included technological insights into “how the brain learns”. From MRI studies being conducted at major universities throughout the world, educators have learned that beyond proper nutrition and “safe” environments, children need additional training and stimulation in order to grow the necessary neural connections to learn and benefit from traditional educational programmes.

Recent University-based studies of the brain have examined the reading and learning process in children and young adults. Results from these studies provide convincing evidence that technology-based programmes can accelerate the acquisition of academic proficiencies for the majority of students who are failing to meet their potential, including students with various learning disabilities. A multimedia presentation of one new technology-based learning programme will be shared, including data on the changes in reading proficiency and other academic achievements.

Dr Barbara Calhoun, Director of Research for Scientific Learning Corporation (USA) will make a presentation on the theme and will demonstrate ‘Fast ForWord’ product that is widely used for helping children with LD.

Dr Barbara Calhoun is the Director of Research for Scientific Learning, a company based in Oakland, California, USA. Scientific Learning (www.scilearn.com) produces the patented Fast ForWord® family of products, a series of computer-delivered reading and language intervention products.

Based on more than 30 years of neuroscience and cognitive research, Fast ForWord products help children, adolescents, and adults build the cognitive skills critical for improving reading and language skills. She currently leads Scientific Learning’s efforts on evidence-based research studies including the publication of several randomised control group studies examining the Fast ForWord software in large urban and rural school districts in the USA. These efforts have resulted in more than 65 published reports from various school districts on the impact of the company’s Fast ForWord software products on cognitive and reading performance within low performing student populations, including students with special learning needs.

Registration: Rs. 250.00 (Rs. 175.00 for students). Registration fee covers vegetarian lunch and tea.
