Official impressions
You’re spending half your life at the work place. The right clothes and attitude can take you a long way, says Bindiya Darshan.

With most people working nine to five, a considerable amount of their time is spent at their work place. Hence it’s important to make a good impression everyday. Whether it is your clothes, behaviour or work.

All about clothes

Don’t draw attention for the wrong clothes. Where work is concerned never opt for fabrics that are too flimsy, loud or inappropriate. You’re there to work and so are the others. No one should get distracted by their own clothes or someone elses. Clean, wrinkle free clothing is always in, whether it is shirts and trousers for the men or dresses for the women.

Gaudy, flashy clothes, loud tee shirts and low necklines are best kept out of the work place. Similarly., simple clothes don’t mean being shabby and careless. Looking smart adds to the impressions you create at the workplace.

A simple shirt paired with straight cut trousers or linen pants worn with a nice pair of shoes should do very well for a regular workday. Pants could also be traded for linen skirts or wrap arounds, only for the women. Never wear clothes that are too tight. Let them be for the gym and for weekends. Own some neat jeans that go with ethnic as well as casual tops. For a simple outfit add a scarf and some matching earrings, but see to it that your earrings are not too long.

Never wear jewellery that make too much of jingling sound as it is distracting and too loud. Make your bangles and anklets simple and less noisy.

Make-up tips

Make up now has become less about following trends and more about expressing your personality.

It should always go with your work and of course your

features, the key to modern make-up is actually to wear what suits you. Always make your make up look natural when you are at your work place.

A sheer foundation, a light lipstick and a little eye liner or kaajal, should do the trick. Colourless mascara gives a natural thick-lashed look, too much of black could make you look like a seventies film star.

Step in your work place looking pleasant and natural. Long manes could be tied up in a convenient pony or a neat braid. This goes for the gentlemen as well as the ladies. Hair all over the face is not a pretty sight.

Work tips

There can be no end to work related tips. But it’s important to get the basics right. Be polite, punctual and regular and you will not need to worry. You are being paid to work, so be sincere. Don’t try to act smart and get away without work. Try and finish allotted tasks before time and be friendly but don’t waste too much time talking to colleagues.

Exchanging malicious gossip is the easiest way to get sidelined by colleagues and decent employers. Gossip always gets around. And noone appreciates a nasty person who is only interested in bitching about colleagues.

A voice mail can take care of routine phone calls. If you do have to take calls, keep it polite but short. An in tray can help collect work and you can avoid wasting precious time talking to people who come to bring it in.

And before you leave, learn to keep all your things in order. It will make the next day’s work simpler.
