Lace, gauze and paper package tied up in a string
Kala Kanthan tells you how to use innovative and thoughtful methods to wrap a gift and make it endearing

A gift is an act of caring, love and affection. The art of gift wrapping has its origins in Far East Asia in Japan as the Japanese believe that the wrapping is as important as the gift. As early as the 16th century, the English used to wrap packages and gifts in wall paper. The Japanese and the Chinese value paper for its functional and spiritual qualities.

The manner in which a gift is wrapped carries an intrinsic message denoting the thoughtfulness and consideration taken towards both the object contained within, the container or in the wrap as well as the recipient. Let your imagination soar to conquer heights of creativity always bearing in mind that less is more.

You could begin with a combination of different textures and colours. Necessity is the mother of invention, and a good start would be the daily newspaper - a rocket or a boat made from newspaper on a plain wrapper is a great eye catcher. Craft paper in bright colours of pink, yellow and blue can be adorned with small wooden dolls for kiddie birthdays, or Ganeshas for auspicious events and with satin flowers for anniversaries. You could also use a candy like bulls eye, a lollipop or a chocolate to accessorize a gift wrap for a child’s gift. Different kinds of lace, satin ribbon, streamers are grea t can be used as a border to accentuate the colours of a gift wrap. You can play and contrast with colours and textures, for example a pink paper with pink lace or a red checked paper lined with red satin ribbon. Crepe paper can be used for wrapping in the form of a bon bon. Old dupattas — plain or bandhini, materials like silk, velvet or satin can be made into small pouches or used to line a box. Glaze paper is ideal for wrapping up stuffed toys or a collection of small knick knacks.

Never forget to recycle old visiting cards, birthday or anniversary cards that can be cut and stuck on wrapping paper. Old visiting cards wrapped with craft paper is a fabulous way to personalize your gift. Using dried flowers or fresh flowers and leaves from your garden to decorate the gift; this speaks of innovation in creativity. Regular brown paper bags with some sequins stuck or using some paints to draw some flowers by your child makes a great return gift.

Plain cardboard available in colors of green, yellow, pink and blue can be cut into circles and can be turned into a cone or a basket with a few candies that kids can take home and enjoy. As far as possible, try and avoid using plastic.

Wrapping a gift is like wrapping your heart. The basic idea of gift wrapping is to match and harmonise contrasting shades and textures - earthy tones with the sublime, rustic with refinement which is central to any idea and approach. A gift wrap must be simple yet eye catching and elegant.
