“Ey! Look man! The ‘King of computer games’ has just walked into our gym.” said Santosh to Arun. Arun turned his head to find his classmate from 10th C walk in, yawning, and casting bored glances. Arun grinned! Vimal walked unto them. He looked like he could drown his skinny self in the shorts that he was wearing. “So what do you guys do here? Just the treadmills to walk on and some dumbbells?? God! What a waste of my time!” said Vimal sounding bitter. “We totally understand man! You have already over exercised your fingers from all the computer games you play every waking hour apart from school. You must be awfully tired!” said Santosh taking an elbow in his ribs from Arun. “YES! I am a computer addict. So what! You have no idea about the world of... never mind, you won’t understand...” went Vimal, shaking his head. They watched as he walked for 10 minutes on the treadmill and was gone! Arun and Santosh could simply not understand how a fifteen year old did not want to go out and play or exercise. It seemed like the most natural thing to do.
A few days later, all the boys in the apartments of Gurucharan Street, V.B. colony decided to go out on a trek. When Arun’s mom mentioned it to Vimal’s mother, she told Vimal that he would have to go if he ever wanted to see his computer intact again.
The morning of the trek, the boys took a bus out of the city to the village from where their trek was to begin. Vimal was cross! Throughout the bus journey, he blamed Arun for his misfortune. Santosh decided to get back at him by scaring Vimal. “At some points, we will have to cross from one hill to the other along a rope…oh! And you do know all about snakes and leeches don’t you?” Vimal gave a sarcastic smile; he was going to get through this and go back to his good ol’ comp! The trek began at the base of the hills with them walking at a good pace. “This is not as tough as you make it sound Santosh!” jeered Vimal. “Clearly there is less to trekking, than there is to a computer game. Waste of my time...” he muttered. Santosh tried to sound amused. “Clearly, we lack your intelligence don’t we? Not as smart as you guruji!” Suddenly the trekking path began to go up along a curve and around a rock. The slope became sharp and the path was slippery and covered with some moss. This was Vimal’s chance to show off. He said, “You know this is too long a path. If we cut across, and go up these boulders, we might reach the top a little earlier.” “I don’t know. Maybe we should stick to this. Look up there; you can’t even see where the boulders lead upto. They seem to curve off the side and we can’t see the other side.” said Arun examining the rocks they were next to. “Come on! This is my first time and I am confident. Why are you veterans worried?” asked Vimal. “OK! Let’s go!” said Arun and they began to climb up the boulders one after the other. The boulders sloped gently at first, but after a while, they got almost vertical. The boys were enjoying themselves, but to Vimal there seemed to be no end to the boulders. He was beginning to feel a great trembling behind his knees. His arms and thighs began to shiver uncontrollably after a while. “I can’t, I can’t anymore! I have to stop now!” he said with a trembling voice. “You stop now, and the only place you are going is straight down a thousand feet guruji!” said Santosh who was behind him. Finally, Santosh began to push Vimal up to help him get higher. “Keep going Vimal. We are almost there.” He kept saying and finally they came upon a ledge which put them back onto the trekking path.
The boys rested for a while. Vimal was shaking from the experience. He could barely feel his thighs. He managed to continue to walk for a while, lagging behind and finding excuses for breaks. “You seem to have suddenly developed a great taste in birds Vimal!” teased Santosh. As the trail began to slope downwards, it hit him in full!! He was having the most painful cramps on earth! It was like a knife cutting into his flesh! His thighs were crying out with pain and he sank to the ground! “Lie down, let us stretch it for you.” said Arun. They tried it all, it simply wouldn’t work! Every time he stood up and took a few steps, he collapsed back to the ground again. This was agony! “Doesn’t look like he is going to be able to walk, guys! We are going to have to carry him down. We should be there in...two hours!” said Santosh, looking at his watch.
Arun and Santosh lifted him with his arms around their shoulders and his thighs in their other hand. They began to walk. Every few minutes, they stopped and took turns with the others. There were four others apart from Arun and Santosh. Everyone helped. Vimal was miserable. “Of all the things to happen to me, why this God? Why?The rest seem so... I am such a weakling, a silly weakling!” He thought as they carried him for the rest of the trek.
At the base, they got into the last bus for the day that headed back to the city. Vimal sat alone in a corner. “God! This humiliation! Make me disappear this instant!” he thought. Vimal limped back to his house and crashed onto his bed. He was in agony, both physical and mental! “Everyone in school will know on Monday! They will laugh at me.” he thought. And not seen by anyone else, he cried himself to sleep.
Sunday morning, Arun and Santosh came to visit Vimal. “Hi guys! Aren’t your arms sore from carrying me?” he asked. “I don’t have arms left. There’s some jelly in their place.” said Santosh. Vimal felt a sting. “I am sorry guys! It’s only because I am so inactive and unfit that this happened.” “Finally!” exclaimed Santosh, “There is light!” “I am starting off with some serious work outs from...” started Vimal. “Wait till your muscles heal.” interrupted Arun. “You will not regret exercising man!” said Santosh with a smile. “Join us, and am sure the next trek, you will carry all of us!”
