Dasara flavours at Mast Kalandar
DHNS
If you are one of the many North Indians in Bangalore and are unable to take off to celebrate Dasara with the family, one thing is for sure -- you won't miss out on the traditional fare served back home during Navratri. Just stop by at `Mast Kalandar', a restaurant on Bannerghatta road and gorge on the festival delicacies from the Northern States of Rajasthan and UP, for just Rs 101 per Thali.

For those who believe in fasting during the Navratras the restaurant has a special `Vrat Thali' , conforming to all the religious do's. The meal is an eclectic mix of aloo ki subzi, kurkuree arbi, makhane ki kheer, sabudana papad, kele ki chaat, mooli lachcha, aloo pakodi and raita with singhare ki pooris which is a Navratri specialty up North.

While the Rajasthan thali offers the ever so popular dal-churma, methi na gattadho saag, raita, the royal bhindi khimsari, pooris, and malpua to sweeten the palette; the UP thali offers the evergreen dahi aaloo, matar paneer, ajwain pooris, adrak ka lachcha, saunth wali dahi pakodi and the melt-in-the-mouth imartee.

And those who find a meal incomplete without a sweet dish, can have their pick of North Indian delicacies like boondi, makhana kheer, suji ka halwa and malpua at the restaurant.

Mast Kalandar is the brainchild of an enterprising techie couple Gaurav Jain and Pallavi Gupta who opted out of the hectic pace of the IT industry and opened this Parantha and Curry joint, almost seven months ago. ``Pallavi and I normally ended up eating out most evenings at expensive fine dining restaurants or at cheap dhabas which have no concept of hygiene whatsoever'' averred Gaurav. To fill the gap we decided to open a restaurant which provides a creative , contemporary, calorie-conscious, cost effective ( a meal costs between Rs 50 - Rs 100, per person) dining experience to the working professional who really has very few choices when it comes to eating out every day of the week, explained Gaurav.''

The regular menu boasts of creative Kalandar Parantha Combos like cheesy spring onion (a favourite with the kids), desi enchillada, the chaat flavoured chutmuk, spicy corn and khasta matar paranthas. All served with dal, salad, pickle /chutney and raita which has a traditional Kumaouni salt mixture made out of 14 ingredients all roasted and ground together.

Other eyecatching Rice Combos on the menu are Boston Veggies with Rice for the ``H 1 returns who can't take spicy food'', Very Masala Pulav, and the ubiquitous range of sandwiches with imaginative filling like corn-mix veggie, peppy paneer and chunky aloo. You can wash down the food with Masala Shikanjee, Aam Ka Panna, Mango Lassi and Maska Lassi.

Said Pallavi ``artificial flavours and colours are a strict no at Mast Kalandar and the spices used are sourced from the region to which the recipe belongs.''

So take a trip down memory lane to family dinners in your childhood this Dussehra, at Mast Kalandar. Its well worth braving the potholed road and the fury of the Rain God for the gastronomic delight on offer.

Mast Kalandar is at A1, Ranga Colony Road, Behind Purva Heights, Off Bannerghatta Road. Call 51527475.
