Club turns 50

Entertainment has always been part of our life. Each generation has its own style of socialising and entertainment. About 50 years ago, a group of bureaucrats started a club called Jayanagar Club in Jayanagar 1st block. The club under the leadership of Raghavendra Rao started functioning from September 15, 1954.

Initially the club had only eight members, now it has crossed 800. In 1976, Jayanagar Club shifted to Banashankari II Stage, when a site was allotted by CITB. The club was renamed as ‘Bangalore Vihara Kendra’ in 1982. Initially the club’s members were only bureaucrats, later personalities from fields like arts, sports, law, medicine, education and IT joined hands.

The club celebrated its golden jubilee on October 7. Deputy chief minister M P Prakash inaugurated the event and V R Sudarshan, speaker Karnataka Legislative Council and R Ashok, MLA were the chief guest. Dr K P Puthuraya, president of the club presided. The gathering saw a colourful cultural event by Raga Ranjani group in the evening. Bangalore Vihara Kendra it is celebrating the ‘Club Day’ today. The event will be followed by entertainment programme by Hasya Ranjani group at 7 pm.

J Appaji, secretary of the club says, “The club has been involved in lot of social activities a bus shelter was donated in Banshankari, tri-cycles were donated to the physically challenged, fruits and clothing were distributed to patients in hospitals of the area on Independence and Republic Day and lot of competitions were held for children every year.”

To mark the Golden Jubilee Celebration, the Kendra was renovated at a cost of Rs 60 lakhs. A spacious auditorium has been constructed and named Golden Jubilee Hall.whichcan accommodate 500 people. This hall is in addition to the party hall, an office room, health club and billiards hall.

President K P Puthuraya says, “The vision of the Kendra is to convert it into a family club by conducting several cultural activities. The kendra has woman members too, there is a special quota for women members”. For details call 26711081.
