Mirroring harsh reality
Vilai; Tamil (U); Cast: Bharani, Saravanan, Ritu Soni; Director: G Kamaraj
Given that Kamaraj’s “Vilai” had to contend with Shankar and Rajnikanth’s “Endhiran”, it still holds on its own. Centring around trafficking trade, “Vilai” turns out to be a decent, watchable outing.
Holding a stark mirror to the pitiable plight of commercial sex workers and how innocent, gullible girls are lured sucked into the trade, Kamraj’s “Vilai” is laudable for its honest homily.
How a brother’s search for his missing sister leads one into the byzantine lanes of pimps, gangsters, flesh traders and hapless existence of girls driven into becoming commercial sex workers forms the focus. Filmed in documentary format, Kamaraj makes “Vilai” worth watching eschewing sleaze and dealing with the subject sensitively. The principal players do justice to their roles. In sum, kudos Kamraj and co.
