Out of the top 65 ranks for LLB in the recently conducted nationwide Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), 55 have confirmed their admission to the much-coveted University.

Despite the last date for confirmation of seats being June 25, candidates confirmed the admissions well in advance.

NLSIU has a total intake of 80 students for its LLB course each year, out of which 55 seats are open to general merit with the rest belonging to various reserved categories.

Best in Asia

Speaking to Deccan Herald, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of NLSIU, Dr R Venkata Rao said, “The 55 seats we have on offer for the general merit category have been occupied by the top 65 rank holders from CLAT. This is once again a testimony to our standing as the best institution not only in the country but the best in Asia.”

Admissions for the LLB course will be held on July 1 and 2, followed by the admissions for the LLM course on July 3rd.

The management at the NLSIU has also decided to restructure the LLM course from a semester to a trimester system.  Dr Rao said, “We had some procedural difficulty with the LLM being a semester system and the LLB, a trimester system. Therefore, for the convenience of both the faculty and students, we have decided to introduce the trimester system for LLM.” Under the new trimester system, the sixth and final trimester of the course will be dedicated for a project or a dissertation to be submitted by the students.

In addition, the management is said to have felt that the trimester system is a more rigorous one.

Distance education

The varsity will use a grant of Rs 37 lakh given by the UGC for IT infrastructure development to boost its distance education facilities. S Gayathri Devi, an information scientist at the University, revealed plans to strengthen the video conferencing facilities for distance education.

“We have nearly 15,000 students who pursue various courses that we offer via distance education. A major portion of the funds will go towards setting up video-conferencing facilities,” she said.

As part of the distance education initiatives, all lectures held in the classes will be recorded and posted on the website.

Besides video-conferencing, the reading materials and the examination pattern for distance education courses will also be revamped.

Written examination

Distance education candidates will now have to appear for a traditional 100 marks written examination, as opposed to a continuous evaluation system.
