Last Updated 19 October 2010, 15:56 IST

After several postponements, the four-day Bangalore School Games, conducted by the Bangalore Schools Sports Foundation, will be held at various venues across the city.
Originally, the organisers had competitions in 12 disciplines but with no takers for hockey and archery, it has now been reduced to a 10-event affair.

“We had to drop archery and hockey from the schedule, so competitions will be held only for 10 sports disciplines.  We have with us people who are experts in their sport and their support will help us make these a successful games,” hockey Olympian MP Ganesh said at a press conference to announce the games on Tuesday.

Nearly 6,000 students from 100 schools in the City of Bangalore will take part in the school games which conclude on Saturday.   “Exams and postponements forced some schools to opt out, but this will be a stepping stone for the children to take up sports professionally,” reasoned director of BSSF, Elvis Joseph.

The games will be held in two categories -- Middle School (5th to 7th standard) and High School (8th to 10th standard). Middle School students will have competitions only in athletics and skating.

In the High School category, apart from athletics and skating, competitions will be held in basketball, cricket, football, kabaddi, rugby, swimming, tennis and volleyball.  The games will officially kick off on Wednesday with an opening ceremony, followed by rugby and cricket action.

Sports and venues: Athletics, basketball, rugby, tennis, volleyball, kabaddi (Sree Kanteerava stadium); football (Sree Kanteerava & St John’s); cricket (RSI & St John’s); swimming (PMSC, Jayanagar); skating (BSK, 3rd stage).
