JOIN USNot all countries celebrate Friendship Day on the same date! While some, including India, celebrate it on the first Sunday of August, others celebrate it on April 8 every year.
The first World Friendship Day was proposed for 30 July in 1958. In May 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution designating 30 July as International Day of Friendship.
The credit for the marketing genius behind the day’s celebration goes to – you guessed it right a greeting card company. Joyce Hall, the founder of HallMark, promoted the day in a big way in the US.
In 1998, Nane Annan, wife of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, named Winnie the Pooh as the world’s ambassador of friendship at the United Nations.
It’s not just one day a year for friends! There are other special days dedicated for special friends. For instance, Women's Friendship Day is on the third Sunday of August, while the third week of May is the Old Friends, New Friends Week. And the entire month of February is designated as the Inter-national Friendship Month.
