Dacoits had asked the family of Anil Kumar Garg, a buisnessman in the town, to collect a packet containing four fingers of Rajat and his cousin Gaurav from near a graveyard a fortnight back, according to police sources here.

“The dacoits told me that there was a Diwali gift for us in a packet near the graveyard... when we went there we found  a packet with four fingers inside it,” Anil said.

While the family members refused to believe that the fingers belonged to the abducted brothers, the police said that they were sending them to a laboratory in Chandigarh for DNA testing.

“We talked to Rajat and Gaurav barely a few days back...they said that they were alright,” Anil said.

Rajat and Gaurav were abducted on September 15 morning when the duo were on way to buy milk. Some dacoits, who came in a jeep, allegedly forced them into the vehicle and sped off.

The family later received a call from the dacoits asking for a ransom of Rs 1 crore which was later scaled down to Rs 25 lakh, police said adding that a Rajasthan-based gang was behind the abduction.

The police had a few days back apprehended several members of the dreaded Rajendra Gurjar dacoit gang suspecting that they might be behind the abduction but got no clues as to the whereabouts of the brothers.

Several gangs of dacoits are active in the ravines of the Chambal river around Mathura, Agra, Etawah and Mainpuri districts in Uttar Pradesh and the nearby Bharatpur district of Rajasthan.
