The restoration work comprised increasing the seating capacity, as well as upgradation of stalls located in the premises. The canteen was opened for consumers at 1 pm on the first day.

Matsya Darshini in Cubbon Park, set up by Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC), is one of the oldest fish canteens in the City. As part of the 1.5 crore renovation of the canteen, the Department has also upgraded the ornamental fish store and the retail shop. The new building can accommodate nearly 150 customers at a time, said the KFDC officials. KFDC officials noted that the canteen has the potential to become a one-shop stop for fisheries products, as well as ornamental fish. The ornamental fish store offers fishes like Black Molly, White Molly, Chicklets fish and Eel.

The canteen offered its trademark fish curry rice, pomfret fry, fish cutlet and prawns biryani to customers on the day one.

Minister V S Acharya said the government would set up similar canteens in other parts of the State, as well.

He also declared that the government has hiked the upper limit of grants for fishermen from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000. Similarly, the diesel allocation for fishing boats has also been increased from 50,000 to 90,000 KL.
