Unscientific work puts residents in a fix

Bus shelter demolished to facilitate construction work of a private institution

For instance, there was a bus shelter at Ulaibailu, where more than 100 families live, but it has been demolished by the institute to facilitate the construction of compound wall three months ago. Though residents were hopeful of a new bus shelter being built by the institution, it has not been materialised so far. Villagers filed a complaint at the Rural police station in this regard and a memorandum was also submitted to the Panchayat Development Officer.

Considering the memorandum submitted by the villagers, the GP took a resolution urging the institution to build a new bus shelter at Ulaibailu. Meanwhile, villagers also have obtained and handed over an NOC from the PWD for the construction work to the institution.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, GP Member Celine Saldanha said that the institution authorities have scant regard towards the well-being of the families residing in the area. “We demand that the institution authorities should construct a bus shelter at the same place at the earliest,” she added.

Artificial flood situation

Residents of the Ulaibailu region face difficulties during heavy rains, as the rainwater drainage here has been clogged due to the accumulation of soil. Another GP Member Mohammed Rafeeq blamed that the soil dumped during the construction work of the institution was entering the drainage during rainy season. “Earlier, there was no problem of flood in the region as the rainwater was flowing through the drainage. However, when the construction work started on the hillock, soil started entering the drainage and following this, the depth of the drainage has been reduced considerably causing artificial flood situation. There is absolutely no way for the residents to reach their homes during rainy season, as water overflows and inundates footpaths as well as agriculture fields. The district administration should intevene and direct the institution to carry out dredging work,” he added.

Further GP members alleged that the institution also makes life of people miserable by letting waste water flow through the open drainage and to neighbouring sites. Rukmaiah Mukari, a Dalit, has already filed a complaint at the police station through the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, they said adding, “it is pathetic that the family was forced to live in a unhygeinic and disgusting surrounding.”

As all their efforts went in vain, now the villagers are now planning of protest.
