Four-day Krishimela from November 11
About 400 stalls to exhibit latest innovations and new varieties of crop
'Krishimela - 2010' - a four-day event organised by the University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS), will begin on November 11.
The mela aimed to showcase the latest technologies and new varieties of crops developed by the farming community, is a platform for exchange of information for farmers and students.
UAS Vice-Chancellor K Narayanagowda said the mela would host several activities like watershed management, precision farming, integrated farming system, technologies on agriculture processing and value addition and nutrition management.
He said: “About 400 stalls will exhibit latest innovations and solutions to agro problems and we are expecting at least four lakh visitors on the occasion.”
Governor H R Bhardwaj will inaugurate the mela which will showcase five new crops developed by the UAS - a short duration paddy (KMP-105), maize variety (Hema or NAH- 1137), high yielding variety of groundnut (Chintamani-2), high yielding Soya (Pooja or MAUS-2) and a cowpea variety (PKB-4).
With the thrust being on organic farming, the university is also furnishing information on vermi compost and other organic research, being conducted. An interaction of the farmers to share their experience on organic farming, integrated farming and efficient utilisation of water and farm mechanism will also be organised during the four days.
“The myth that farming is a loss will be proved wrong by showcasing success story of integrated farming,” said the Vice-Chancellor.
‘Success story’
The university is also showcasing its success story on jackfruit value addition by introducing jackfruit juice and wine to the visitors in the wake of emphasis laid on post-harvest technology and value added products.
Farmers will be brought to the mela from various parts of the State and will be introduced to the new findings. The experts at the experimental sites will furnish the information sought by them.
The successful farmers, one each from 17 districts coming under the jurisdiction of the UAS will be felicitated for their outstanding contribution.
