Indian lecturer charged with taking bribe from student
An Indian national, a senior lecturer in a private university in Malaysia, has been charged with allegedly taking bribe from a female student, promising her better grades in the examination.
Krishna Prasad Pramulapati (52), of the Multimedia University in Cyberjaya, was charged at the Sessions Court yesterday with soliciting a 10,000 rupees bribe from the student, local media reports said today.
Pramulapati has denied the charges of taking the bribe from S Kumalini Devi, 24, as an inducement to give her better grades in Algorithm Analysis paper, reports said.
He allegedly committed the offence at the Information Technology Faculty in Malaysia's hi-tech city Cyberjaya.
Ahmad Sazilee Abdul Khairi of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission proposed a bail at 130,000 rupees. Counsel Arunan Selvaraj pleaded for a lower bail of 65,000 rupees as his client was a foreigner and his wife was in Sri Lanka, adding that he had no family members here.
Judge Yong Zarida Sazali granted Krishna 100,000 rupees bail in two Malaysian sureties and has fixed August 3 for hearing of the case.
Under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act-2009, if Prasad is found guilty, he could face a 20-year jail term or five times the bribe amount or RM 10,000 or which is higher.
