Ranji trophy: Goa in trouble against Tripura

Last Updated 09 December 2010, 15:07 IST

From here, it is a huge mountain to climb for the Goan batsmen and their hopes of an entry into the knock-out semi-final phase appear to have vanished.

At close of play today, skipper Sagun Kamat was batting on 58 and Rahul Keni was on 39 as Goa averted a first innings repeat after they slid to 61 for four. Tripura rode on a maiden century by Nishit Shetty (105) and Rajib Datta’s dogged innings of 76 not out to steer the team to 353 in 103.4 overs.

Goa’s second innings took a similar course like in the first, when Vaibhav Naik (1) and Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan (5) went early, both claimed by medium pacer Timir Chanda, to leave it at 24 for two.

Reagan Pinto, from whom much was expected after his first innings failure following his two successive centuries in the last two matches, also did not last long. After making a promising start hitting three fours, he gave Chanda his third wicket. Regan made 16 from eight balls.

From three for 53, Goa got into further trouble losing the seasoned campaigner Ajay Ratra for nought.  The former India stumper survived 12 balls before edging Rana Datta to Rajib behind the stumps.

Chanda, who had claimed four for 35 in Goa’s first innings, has three for 43 in the second.

Earlier resuming at the overnight score of 186 for four, Tripura lost Bappa Das early.  He could only add one more run to his overnight score of 5 before Saurabh Bandekar rattled his stumps with the total on 196.

At 211, Bandekar won an lbw appeal against Timir Chanda (7) to leave the visitors six down and Goa sensed a chance to wrap up the Tripura innings quickly.

It was not to be as Rajib Datta provided solid company to Nishit Shetty, who duly completed his century, his first in 48 matches for the state. But soon after reaching the milestone, Shetty misread a delivery from Shadab Jakati and was out lbw.  Shetty hit 11 fours and a six in his 155-ball knock.

With a major obstacle out of their sight Goans went for the kill but were not successful as Datta provided a stiff resistance even though wickets fell at the other end as he remained unbeaten on 76.

Robin D’Souza had the best bowling figures for Goa with four for 77. Saurabh Bandekar claimed three for 102 and Shadab Jakati had three for 63.
