Dear Sir,

I am in BCom I year. My aggregate in II PUC was 88%, with full marks in Accounts. I would like to pursue both MBA and CA. Please suggest the steps I should take to complete my education successfully.

Uma Bharathi

Dear Uma Bharathi,

It’s good that you are scoring well and are focused about your higher studies. If you are an introvert and prefer to work by yourself, if you have good concentration and can work without interruption, then you will enjoy being a CA. You could have started off by appearing for the CPT (Common Proficiency Test) much earlier, but even now, if you register with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (www.icai.org, Bangalore office is behind Mahavir Jain Hospital in Vasanthnagar), and if you clear the CPT in the very first attempt, then you know that you have the ability to pursue Chartered Accountancy, and can go ahead with your articleship training, computer courses, etc. On the other hand, if you are a people-oriented person with good communication and leadership skills, then you may aim for an MBA from a good college, for which you can start preparing from next year for the CAT (Common Aptitude Test, www.iimb.ernet.in), which you will be eligible to appear in November 2012. Decide on your first choice and focus on it as far as possible. There is nothing to stop you from doing both MBA and CA, but it is better you take them up one by one, ensuring that you do justice to your first qualification, and looking upon the second one as an additional one.

Dear Sir,

I am currently in BA 3rd year with psychology, sociology and economics as my subjects. I want to do my post-graduation in Human Resources after my graduation. But, I’m confused about the course I should pursue — HR Management or HR Development. I have no work experience. Could you please suggest colleges in India where I can pursue this course? Also, please let me know what the scope of Industrial Sociology is and where in India can I take it up?

Dipta Maitra

Dear Dipta,

Human Resource Management and Development are one and the same. You can become an HR professional by taking up either an MBA with specialisation in HR, or by taking up a PG degree or diploma in HR after completion of your BA. These courses are available in innumerable colleges all over India, and it would be impossible to give a list of the hundreds of alternatives.   Of course, IIMs continue to be most in demand for MBA, and for that you should appear for the CAT exam.  Since you are in the final year of BA, you could have appeared for it in Nov 2010 itself, but now, you can prepare in advance and appear in Nov 2011. The other famous institute is Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI, www.xlri.ac.in). A post-graduation in Industrial Sociology would give you deep insights into the theoretical aspects of how labour and personnel behave, and how to manage people in an organisational set-up. It is more suited for people who wish to do research, development, teaching, etc.

Dear Sir,

I am studying in 10th standard. I want to become a psychiatrist. What , what should i do next. Please can you give suggestion for this.

Payal

Dear Payal,

If you have a love for people, and have empathy towards those who suffer from disorders and mental ailments, then you can be an efficient psychiatrist. You need to take up biology, chemistry and physics in your +2, and then give the entrance exam (CET or AIPMT) for medicine after your 12th standard Board exams. MBBS is a 5-1/2 year course, including the internship period, and when you have completed your degree in medicine, you are eligible to apply for entrance exams for a post-graduation in psychiatry (you can either do a 2-year diploma in psychiatric medicine - DPM, or a 3-year MD in psychiatry). The premier institution for the study of psychiatry is NIMHANS in Bangalore, but there are more than a dozen other good colleges all over the country.

Dear Sir,

I am pursuing my 2nd year BSc in biotechnology and botany. I want to know whether I am eligible to write the IAS exam next year. I would be glad if you give me information regarding the exam, its pattern, preparation, do’s and dont’s, etc.

Dear Student,

Entry into the IAS and other allied civil services is through a common exam conducted once a year by the Union Public Service Commission (www.upsc.gov.in). Anyone who has completed a degree course through a recognised Indian university is eligible to apply. You will be eligible to give the exam only in 2012 when you complete your third year. You can start your preparation for the exam by brushing up your general knowledge, keeping abreast of current affairs, and building up your personality and communication traits. One year before the exam, you can either take coaching, or go through some old question papers and study manuals and actually start preparing for the exam. Keep in mind that it is highly competitive and only a few hundred are finally chosen from lakhs of candidates who apply.
