Govt modifies NREGS

Last Updated 06 July 2009, 17:34 IST

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced modification in the NREGS to ensure increase in its productivity in creation of assets. The changes would be done mainly by converging the NREGS with other schemes related to agriculture, forest, water resources, land resources and rural roads.

At present, the scheme’s thrust is to create drought-proof works like constructing lakes, water harvesting schemes and planting trees.

In the first stage, a total of 115 pilot districts have been selected for such convergence.
Details of these measures and convergence guidelines would be announced soon by the Rural Development Ministry. The minister also announced Rs 39,100 crore for the NREGS for 2009-10 which is 114 per cent more than the previous Budget’s allocation.
