Haiti: 140 more Cholera deaths reported

Last Updated 03 May 2018, 05:17 IST

According to a report from the Ministry of Public Health and Population, the epidemic has affected 134,678 people since Dec 20.

The bulletin confirmed that 73,853 patients had to be hospitalised, and 1,989 remain in hospitals at this time.

Artibonite is still the most affected region, with 818 deaths. The cholera epidemic spread throughout all 10 Haitian regions and entered the Dominican Republic, which has reported 120 cases.

The authorities emphasised the mishandling of corpses as one of the biggest problems in the struggle against that epidemic.

Meanwhile, international aid continued to arrive, but was insufficient given the health emergency. The international medical presence is considerable, especially the Cuban medical brigade, which has treated 40 per cent of cholera patients and reported a mortality rate of less than one per cent.
