DK forms expert team to tackle monsoon havocs

With the death of labourer in Mlore city, the toll has touched 9 in DK

Speaking at a meeting convened to discuss ways and means to tackle monsoon on Wednesday, he said people can contact district administration in case of any emergency. A boat has been sent from Pilikula to Kemral following the request by the local residents from Kemral. An expert team has been formed to tackle the monsoon havocs in the district.

Home Guards has deployed 50 personnel to respond to the rain related problems in the district. This includes 25 personnel for Kadaba, Subrahmanya and Bantwal.
Tahsildars have already identified low lying areas and taken all precautionary measures. MCC has earmarked one JCB and a tipper to 20 wards.
Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rains in the next 48 hours in Dakshina Kannada district.

The average rainfall in the district is 3,912.2 mm while the average rainfall in the month of July is 1,217 mm. From July 1 to 8, the district has received 575.6 mm.

As many as nine lives have been lost in the district till date. Eight houses have been damaged in the district. As many as  282 houses have been partially damaged. The crops in 17.99 hectare land has been damaged.

A sum of Rs 45.94 lakh public property has been damaged. The total loss is estimated to be Rs 75.90 lakh. The Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) account of Deputy Commissioner has Rs 85 lakh to meet any emergencies.

Artificial flood

Owing to the rains, artificial floods have appeared in Pavanje and Haleyangadi region in Mulky. Several trees have been uprooted on the road near Aikala in Kinnigoli. A compound wall of Punarooru Vishwanath Temple collapsed incurring a loss of Rs 2 lakh.
The movement of vehicles was disrupted for one hour on Mysore-Bantwal State Highway at Goonadka as a huge tree fell on a electric pole.

In Udupi

The district got some respite from heavy rains on Wednesday. The water-level in the rivers too has gone down and the inundated places are out of danger. Speaking to Deccan Herald, In-Charge Deputy Commissioner Prasanna Kumar said the water-level has decreased in all the rivers. Udupi is returning to normalcy. However, Udupi is likely to receive heavy rains in the next 24 hours. The district administration is all set to face the emergency situation. The Gram Panchayat and taluk administration have been asked to be alert and be equipped to handle any emergency calls,” he said.

The Home Guards are prepared to face the emergency situations with additional man power. Constant patrol is being done in the flood prone areas. Mobile units have been deployed all over the district. Home Guards Commandant Ganapathy Bhat said all precautionary measures have been taken. “We have held talks with  TEBMA Shipyard Company to seek their service in case of emergency.”

The Udupi district has received an average of 85.13 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. This include Karkala - 70.20 mm, Kundapur - 138.20 mm and Udupi - 47.00 mm rainfall.



Schools to be closed today too

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district administrations have declared holidays for all primary and high schools in the district on Thursday as well following the forecast of heavy rains in the next 24 hours.
