SC notice to MP govt, DGHS on college issue

Last Updated 08 July 2009, 20:09 IST

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said: “Private medical colleges have no right to admit students against the all India quota seats. “We will issue contempt notice to those colleges which are not admitting students recommended by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS),” said the bench while hearing a petition regarding admission to private medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh.

The bench issued notice to the MP Government, DGHS, private medical colleges and the Association of Private Dental and Medical Colleges of MP to file their replies.

Advocate Abhisek Singhvi, appearing for the association,  submitted that the vacant seats were filled after May 31 as the DGHS failed to recommend candidates for admission. The court did not concede to the arguments and said the 50 per cent all-India quota has to be filled by the candidates from the all-India tests. One of the candidates in a petition alleged that many of these seats were diverted to the candidates who had paid hefty capitation fees.
