Tribals sacrifice hundreds of animals in Orissa

Last Updated 11 January 2011, 13:22 IST

The tribals killed animals and offered them to their god in a jungle, about two kms away from the place where the main yatra takes place, police said.

Sulia yatra was held at BadaKahla village under Khairguda block, the traditional place of worship, as the district administration proclaimed Section 144 CrPC (prohibitory orders) in the area to prevent animal sacrifice three days before yatra.

The Orissa High Court in its interim directive had asked the district administration of Bolangir to follow the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Accordingly, the sub-divisional authority of Bolangir made wide publicity and organised awareness rally and camps in villages not to sacrifice animals.

Satryanarayan Bhoi, Zilla Parisad Member and senior advisor Zilla Adivasi Kalyan Parisad, which is advocating animal sacrifice, strongly opposed the restriction.

Claiming that animal sacrifice at their place of worship was traditional rights of tribals, they undertook the practice at a distance, he said.

The Sub Divisional Magistrate-cum-Sub collector has served notice under Section 107 on the office bearers of Zilla Adivasi Kalyan Parisad, Bolangir among others preventing them from entering the maim Puja place.
