Work on total cleanliness drive begins in 47 GPs

Speaking at a district-level meeting on water and sanitation in Madikeri, he said 51 Gram Panchayats have already won Nirmala Grama Puraskar awards. The remaining 47 Gram Panchayats should implement Sampoorna Swachatha Andolan effectively and should be able to achieve 100 per cent progress by March 2011.

Out of 38,823 BPL families in the district, toilets have been constructed for 33,996 BPL families in the district. The construction of toilets for 18,095 families have achieved 100 per cent progress. About 97 per cent progress has been achieved in the construction of 179 toilets in schools. Out of 287 Anganwadi centres, toilets have been constructed in 266 toilets, he informed.

On eco-friendly toilets, the CEO said that Bhageeratha (NGO) has conducted training for the teachers, BRP, CRP and anganwadi workers. A one-day training programme will be held for the newly elected Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat members on the activities of Total Cleanliness Drive, he added. 

To maintain sustainability among the beneficiaries under BPL, 100 persons will be selected from each taluk and will taken on tour to those gram panchayats which have achieved cent per cent success. To create awareness on cleanliness, school level, cluster level, taluk and district-level painting, elocution and essay contest have been organised.

The CEO said ‘Cleanliness month’ will be organised through streetplays, seminars, chariot show, TV and Radio show in 98 Gram Panchayats on January 26. Cement tanks will be installed at those schools and Gram Panchayats for the disposal of wastes in the form of degradable and non-degradable waste.
