'We are adventurous little gypsies'

And the Mumbai media was invited too. Vivek Oberoi and wife Priyanka Alva continue to keep their lips sealed when it comes to details of their wedding.  

Vivek says he ‘lives the media 24x7 and knows how it functions’. But his wife Priyanka is very guarded in her approach. One look at the couple is enough to convince that they are in a state of marital bliss. Priyanka blushes every time she throws a glance at her husband or when Vivek speaks about her. And Vivek knows how to keep his wife in good humour. “She is the love of my life,” or “can’t you see how happy she is? Her face is glowing. One can’t glow like that unless one has swallowed a light bulb or it can happen only if your husband loves you that much” are enough for Priyanka to start blushing.

Being an actor, Vivek is affable and approachable, people know him. But there is an aura of mystery regarding Priyanka, who prefers to remain in the background and let Vivek do all the talking.

Priyanka comes across as an intelligent girl who’s conscious of her rich pedigree. But she likes to keep it low, at least at the moment. “Politics, art, culture, social work – there is a bit of all these in me because that’s how I have been brought up. I am still figuring out what I would like to do eventually,” she says.

Coming from a non-filmi background, their marriage raised a lot of speculation about how Priyanka would adjust to her new life in Bollywood and Mumbai.  Did she get any culture shock? “Yes, I’m married to a man from Bollywood. Contrary to perception, adjusting hasn’t been a problem. We are more similar. We have been brought up with same values. Art and culture are a part of our growing up,” defends Priyanka.

She is not even daunted by Mumbai’s fast paced life. “As far as the City is concerned, I am getting used to it. Mumbai is a big city. Life is fast. Travelling is a problem. It takes two hours to reach a place. But Mumbai is a lovely city. People show solidarity for a cause. We have something to learn from them,” she adds.

As couple, have they found their common grounds and hobbies? “We love to raise money for charity. We love to travel. In fact both sides of the family love to travel. We are adventurous little gypsies,” says Vivek and Priyanka nods.  

But Vivek continues to visit religious places on his own, is he a devout person? “I think I am devout, at least I come across as one.” But Priyanka begs to differ, “I don’t think so. The expression ‘spiritually inclined’ will be more apt for him. Visiting religious places is sort of a spiritual practice for him.”

Coming from different regions, has their diverse dietary preferences led to any squabbles on the dining table? “I’m a non vegetarian while Vivek is a vegetarian. But there is no conflict as we respect each other’s personal choice and ultimately believe in healthy eating,” explains Priyanka.
