Two corporate bigwigs, P C Balasubramanian and Raja Krishnamoorthy, have compiled and elaborated upon Tamil superstar Rajinikanth’s popular one-liners to pen a book pegged as PUNCHtantra — Value Statements for Managing Life & Business Situations. “We have been fans of the star since childhood and were piqued by his phenomenal effect on the masses,” P C Balasubramanian confesses.

While Balasubramanian is a chartered accountant by qualification, Raja Krishnamoorthy is one of the directors of a Chennai-based HR services organisation.

So incredibly, PUNCHtantra threads Rajini’s punch-lines’ relevance to governance, motivation, leadership, commitment, foresight, social responsibility, value, quality, reputation, sharing, selflessness and more!

For instance, consider the line En vazhi thani vazhi (my way is a unique way) from Padayappa, a punch line analysed in the book. “You need to be different to succeed. Don’t choose a ‘me too’ line of business or a ‘me too’ way of running a business... Recent history talks of many failures on account of this very herd culture. The failure of many dotcom companies is a typical example,” the analysis reads.

A concise book with crisp elaborations, the one-liners come alongside Rajini’s images mouthing those very lines. “I hope all the readers will enjoy reading this book,” pens Rajini in the book’s foreword. That they will. After all, this life-skills book that ponders on 30 of Rajini’s punch lines from various films does take a new and separate route to wisdom — the filmy one.

Rajini’s one-liners  have become cult phrases, and a part of everyday conversations. So what is the magic behind Rajini’s punch lines? “These punch lines work because they are direct, crisp, yet insightful. They come in a language that the common man is comfortable with,” says Nikhil Murugesh, veteran Tamil film critic.
