BJP captures power in Bangalore Rural ZP
The BJP has succeeded in holding on to the reins of power in Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat.
In the elections held on Monday, BJP members Bhagyamma and Shanthamma were elected president and vice-president respectively.
In the House of 18 members, BJP had won nine seats, JD(S) six and Congress three seats. The president’s post was reserved for the Backward Class (woman) category.
As there were no members either in the JD(S) or the Congress who would qualify for the reservation, the BJP managed to bag the president’s post. Bhagyamma, member from Kanasavadi in Doddaballapur, was elected president unopposed.
The vice president’s post was unreserved. The contest was between Shanthamma of the BJP and Sunanda of the JD(S). In the election to the post, they got nine votes each.
All nine BJP members voted in favour of Shanthamma, while six JD(S) and three Congress members voted for Sunanda.
Regional commissioner K S Prabhakar, who is also the returning officer, opted for a lucky dip. BJP candidate Shanthamma was lucky and was declared elected as the vice-president.
