After a long drawn battle, the State government has decided to return nearly 500 acres of land acquired from farmers of Satyamangala, Chikkakondagula, Mavinakere and surrounding villages, and has issued a notification in this regard.

Addressing a news conference, former minister and BJP leader K H Hanumegowda said that land had been acquired by previous government led by JD(S) for housing and industrial purpose much against the interest of farmers.

Hundreds of farmers had launched protest against the government and had demanded Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa for returning the land as it belonged to small and marginal farmers.  Responding to farmers’ plea, the government issued a notification to return 500 acres of land to respective owners at the earliest.

Hanumegowda said the Karnataka Housing Board and other government departments had opposed acquisition of land. Even some politicians have proposed the government to develop it as a green belt instead of and returning to ryots.

But the chief minister, Housing Minister V Somanna and Revenue Minister Karunakar Reddy supported the farmers cause. In his address, another BJP leader Kattaya Ashok said Somanna would hold discussion with the villagers of Sankenahalli and Gavenahallli who lost their land.

Huge function

A function will be held to felicitate chief minister and other ministers for returning the land to the respective owners.

BJP activists Narayana, D Y Gopal, Maruti Devaraj, Gopal and others were present.
